Satellite remote sensing for oceans has evolved tremendously over the last ten years. Today, we observe ocean color, sea-surface temperature ocean winds, ocean topography, etc. by satellite remote sensing. The concept of global observation of the ocean from space was born among a small community of scientists. From that start, it has taken over ten years to develop the satellite remote-sensing capability we use today. The potential users of this high-quality data should not be limited to remote-sensing scientists. Nonetheless, it is not fully used by the ocean community in general.
Education and capacity building for application of satellite remote sensing are the key motivations to establish CReSOS.
